Boyuk Khanizadagh, Azerbaijan
Boyuk Khanizadagh in Azerbaijan is one of the largest mud volcanoes! It has a diameter of 10km and a height of 700m. On October 10, 2001, it erupted sending flames shooting out 300m into the air, the highest recorded flame height from a mud volcano eruption! The formation of this mud volcano is closely linked to the "Shield formation" of igneous volcanoes.
More About Azerbaijan: Currently, we know more than a thousand mud volcanoes to exist globally. The coastal areas of Azerbaijan are home to 400 mud volcanoes alone! Unlike the Indonesian mud volcano, LUSI, which had a mud flow temperature range of 70°C–100°C, the mud volcanoes in the area can have very cold mud flow, often just above freezing.
