El Totumo, Columbia
Location: Santa Catalina, Columbia
Height: 15m
Why is this landform unique?
El Totumo is unique because stairs have been built on it to allow people to have mud baths. The mud is said to have healing properties, so this landform is a huge tourist attraction for the area. After the mud bath, people would wash off in a nearby lagoon. Another interesting piece of information is that local folklore claimed that this mud volcano used to be an igneous volcano that spewed out lava. However, a priest used holy water to banish the "Devil" within the volcano, which then turned it to mud. Though this is just folklore, it could provide more insight on the connection of mud volcanoes and igneous volcanoes. Could this mud volcano possibly have been an igneous volcano? If not, were there other igneous volcanoes around the area?
